No one changes your life as deeply as a parent, and this is true of churches as well as people. A large part of the vision behind starting vibrant new churches is the conviction that mature churches should reproduce.
- It brings the joy of watching a new church develop and grow.
- New leaders and new gifts are realized.
- It focuses a congregation’s energy positively and outwardly.
The most effective way to grow a new church is for a healthy parent church to plant it. This happens when a pastor catches the vision and calls their congregations to parent a new church.
- Some churches join other RCA congregations to team-parent a new church.
- Others pull together the resources to plant on their own.
- Still others have the vision to plant multiple congregations.
The new congregations have “church-planting DNA.” Through the Holy Spirit’s power, they carry on a legacy of evangelism through church-planting.
Discerning Your Call to Be a Parent Church
Nothing is as effective as church planting in reaching spiritually disconnected people. At this very moment, God is stirring the hearts of bright, passionate, visionary individuals, filling them with courage and faith to plant and pastor the churches of tomorrow. They need bold partners to stand alongside them!
Partnership in planting a new church multiplies opportunities to bring Christ into the lives of others; it also brings new vitality and joy to the existing congregation. Here’s how the apostle Paul put it:
“Every time I think of you, I give thanks to my God. I always pray for you, and I make my requests with a heart full of joy because you have been my partners in spreading the Good News about Christ from the time you first heard it until now” (Philippians 1:3-5, NLT).
